Catacombs was one of ten artworks selected by Vancouver Island Symphony for their Pictures Project in April 2022. Artists were asked to submit works that responded to Modest Mussorgsky’s suite Pictures at an Exhibition (1874). The artworks were featured in live symphony performances and were also on display in several locations around Nanaimo.

Mussorgsky composed Pictures at an Exhibition after his friend, artist Viktor Hartmann, passed away in 1873. Hartmann visited the Catacombs of Paris, creating an artwork of his time underground, and in turn Mussorgsky crafted one of the movements around this image. The artwork I created, a digital collage, includes bones I photographed in the Catacombs when I visited Paris in 2019.
